How to steam cook broccoli — step by step

Procedure:

Wash all the broccoli with clean water by rubbing your fingers through the crown in order to remove dirt and any other insect that may have attacked the crop. After this, trim off the florets by slicing through the broccoli stem. Try to make it very close to the crown. The crown will break into very large florets and therefore further slicing into small pieces is required. After doing this, place them in a small bowl.

Wash the stem of the broccoli thoroughly and peel off the top layer of the skin, though this is not very important. Cut off the bottom edge of the stem as it is mostly hard to cook and not very tasty. Cut the remaining stem into small disks and put them on a separate bowl. Always try to cook the stem and the florets separately because the stem is very hard and therefore it will take a lot of time when cooking. Allow the water to come to a boil and then cook the stems until they are crispy and tender.

Steaming using a microwave

Take the florets and the stems and place them in a microwave safe dish. Add 2-3 tablespoon of water over the microwave safe dish and cover it with a dinner plate. Microwave it on HIGH for at least 3-4 minutes. Remove the dinner plate carefully and observe if it is tender. In case it is not tender additional of 1 minute is necessary in order to make it tender.
